Saturday 16 October 2004 at 17.30 is scheduled to be the winner of the Dedalus 2004 Award winner, which will be determined by an expert jury coordinated by Andrea Branzi's prize-winner and voting cards that will be compiled by the audience who will visit the exhibition. The winner will be awarded a prize of € 6.000 Inspired by the mythological figure symbolizing the inventive design, imagination and creative freedom - Dedalo - 1987 was born in Dedalus, an initially linked double-threaded design world and evolved until focus attention on new trends in society and culture, capable of carving an independent and recognizable space in the Italian cultural landscape.
Throughout the eight editions, biennial, which nowadays make up its history, Dedalus has always been inspired by a single philosophy: to capture the changes and to create short circuits to tackle innovative and avant-garde topics with a dissuasive spirit and bring to Bra some of the most lively Italian intelligences, from Sottsass to Mendini, from Ghezzi to Abruzzo, Giugiaro to Fiorucci, Rector to Trapattoni. And so it was talk of creativity and cities, of fetish goods such as the Vespa and the Swatch, of Trash and of recycling, of communication and mass media, always with the light tone of the tale, using different forms such as the exhibition, talk- shows, urban installations, light talk at a coffee table.
From the 1998, the event's proposal has been enriched: the Dedalus Award for European Design has been established, a unique award in its field that emphasizes the historic link with the world of design and which wants to reward the work of well-established designers.
The originality of the prize consists primarily of its formula, based on the comparison between young European designers, invited to exhibit a significant profile of their personality. This formula was born from the idea that the central pivot of the vast phenomenon of design, industry and economy is always and in any case the designers, that is, the physical persons who do this trade, deciding to question in a open comparison with colleagues and with the market.
At this moment many things are changing in our society and the beginning of the new century was marked by the advent of the society of uncertainty, in the sense that many of the theorems on which the previous century had founded its hope for a great refoundation of the world into modernity, have crashed and new paradigms stall to come into operation.
This kind of wait, this suspension to the future, must not be experienced as a negative condition, but as a great opportunity to check the reasons for planning every day, without reference to large cultural and political containers. Among the elements of this new state of uncertainty, there is one that concerns the very role of design in the ultra-saturated markets of our society; this is the growing demand for aesthetic and technological aptitude that society demands. This growing demand for innovation and beauty is not easily faced by industries acting on the market: innovation and beauty are not easily programmable and the success of a product in a context of great competition becomes increasingly difficult to guarantee. For this reason, the presence of designers is the only guarantee that, to this difficult problem, someone tries to make a solution. So designers, young designers, who are autonomously and freely responsible for renewing signs, interpreting technologies, imagining new products, new services, and new businesses, are an extraordinary resource for our Western society. Without designers there would not be the design, industry and the economy that it moves. Great investments are made to promote the products, but not enough to promote who the products are able to imagine.
For 2004, the IV edition of the Dedalus - Abet Design for Europe design reserved for designers under the age of 40 years has been banned, which have made major projects in the field of research and production. Any designer of less than 40 years of age, of any European nationality and of any degree of qualification can participate in the contest, who can demonstrate that he has successfully pursued the profession or research activity in the field of industrial design.
